on February 8, 2008The reason for the term fireman rather than firefighter is that is a long held term that almost all the firemen I have asked prefer. I think rather than homogenize the term it would be better if women were included in the club... Taken in as equals. I spoke with 8 females in the CFD and they all wanted to be known as firemen. Would you change Alderman to alderwoman? There are many more examples where it would be foolish to change the term especially in order to satisfy some "politically correct" requirement. By the way, you might want to look up Stalin's "Socialist Realism". This is where the roots of political correctness are... in totalitarian enforcement of ideology. I mean no insult to women in the fire service but rather to include them. You know they are really not accepted as people who go into burning buildings. I think one of the reason s for this is because the men feel forced to accept them by, for one thing, having to change their long held, historical term.
