• Still and Box, 7037 Parnell, Chicago
This is a good demonstration of the fire and subsequent heat inside and why a building has to be vented that is, opened in various places to allow heat to escape.
 • The fire spreads
Standing in front of a structure and moving clockwise, sides are identified as sectors, 1, 2, 3, 4. This facilitates radio communication.
Here, at a Still and Box, 6620 S. Aberdeen on 12/17/05, the fire is leaping out the window in sector 2 to the one next-door, identifed as the exposure building.

 • Clogged hydrant
Aside from frozen hydrants, there are other reasons for their dysfunction. For example, when somone opens a hydrant cap and throws something in: boots tree branches, clothes... In this fire it was difficult to get water from an engine deck-gun because a dirty hydrant had clogged the engine's pump.
• You mean they really can't see much... not like the movies.
 • Reading smoke: a progression 1-6 of black smoke to flames. Black smoke is what is emitted before any water is put on the fire. White smokle usually indicates steam, created by the water hitting hot surfaces. Water also serves to lower the temperature. A space can spontaneously burst into flame if the air and gasses are hot enough as is the case above.
