Reading smoke: a progression 1-6 of black smoke to flames. Black smoke is what is emitted before any water is put on the fire. White smokle usually indicates steam, created by the water hitting hot surfaces. Water also serves to lower the temperature. A space can spontaneously burst into flame if the air and gasses are hot enough as is the case above.
