Alan Jacobs > Clogged hydrant Aside from frozen hydrants, there are other reasons for their dysfunction. For example, when somone opens a hydrant cap and throws something in: boots tree branches, clothes... In this fire it was difficult to get water from an engine deck-gun because a dirty hydrant had clogged the engine's pump. 7020 S. Loomis, 4/24/05, Chicago. Sector 3 (rear).

Alan Jacobs > Reading smoke: a progression 1-6 of black smoke to flames. Black smoke is what is emitted before any water is put on the fire. White smokle usually indicates steam, created by the water hitting hot surfaces. Water also serves to lower the temperature. A space can spontaneously burst into flame if the air and gasses are hot enough as is the case above.
